Learning from each other in Andalusia

The RAFAEL project recently held its third technical exchange to enable the sharing of knowledge and skills amongst authentic producers. The main theme of the technical exchange visit was organic farming in protected areas. The exchange took place in Andalusia, Spain, where the activities of the project focus on developing the local market for organic produce and supporting producers to work together.

The exchange was made up of visits to a number of enterprises – all of which demonstrated the links between the product and the landscape in which it is produced. All of the participants had a lot of experience to share including the different methods used to sell their goods directly to the public, through box schemes, farm shops, internet sales and producer co-operatives.

Participants learnt about the production of Iberian pork, honey, goat’s cheese, chestnuts and other typical regional products including soups, pates and marmalades. Workshop sessions focussed on organic farming in protected areas, methods of direct selling and agri-tourism. The exchange proved that each of the participating regions has similar problems and solutions and it offered a unique opportunity for producers to be able to learn from one another. 

In addition there was a conference and fair taking place on the links between organic farming, culture and tourism in protected areas. The RAFAEL project had a stand showing various produce from the partner regions. The exchange also offered an opportunity for producers to develop business links between regions, as part of the RAFAEL trade activities.
